Presently you must obtain a user account in order to post new or edit existing articles. It's really not that much of a hassle.

Why We're Here

To document, promote, and sustain the literary underground in the most grassroots way possible: relying on the knowledge of said literary underground. To give incoming generations of writers and publishers a sense of history from which they may learn and to which they can contribute. To remain balanced and factual. To bring writing back to the reader.

What this website aims to do is what MySpace has done for music: bring it to a global audience. Literary journals have for too long relied on writers to keep them alive. Every man should write. Not every man writes well. It is imperative that there be an audience. There is not. Instead there are submissions boxes full of our reader's submissions, because our readers are all writers. The Underground Library aims to be the premiere place for information regarding x lit mag or y unknown/unpublished writer.

How You Can Help

The most important thing you can do for the underground literary world is contribute your two cents.

If you've been writing for or reading literary journals and small press books for any length of time, then the chances are you know more than you think. About defunct magazines. Old gossip and truth surrounding existing magazines. Chances are you were involved in at least one magazine by now. If everyone contributes exactly the extent of their knowledge regarding a writer or magazine, and spreads the word about the contributions they've made, then this encyclopedia is sure to flourish into a compendium of love. We ask that you document what you know. Continue to do so as things return to your memory. There's an Assignments page to get you started. A (growing) sysops group to institute features you think are necessary.

Always blank spaces will be maintained for new voices. Knowledge knows no preferential dogma. Fact knows no master. Reference needs no excuse. Thank you for stopping by, please make yourself at home.
